Larrau and surrounding area
Larrau: nature, traditions and heritage in the heart of Pays-Basque
Nestling at the foot of the Orhy Peak, the highest peak in Pays-Basque, and the starting point for the emblematic hike to the Holzarte footbridge - suspended 150 m above the gorges, Larrau is a must for lovers of fine walks. Set in a green setting at the foot of the Pyrenees and just a few kilometres from the Spanish border, close to the magnificent Kakuetta Gorge, Larrau embodies the authenticity of the Pays-Basque. The village is as attractive for its magnificent scenery as it is for its well-preserved heritage, with picturesque narrow streets and pretty houses with slate roofs.
Lovers of tradition will love meeting the shepherds and sampling the local produce, including the famous Ossau-Iraty cheese.
The Pays-Basque, between the Atlantic Ocean and the mountains, is a unique destination combining tradition, breathtaking scenery and the art of living. On the way to your holiday, you can visit typical villages such as Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, gateway to the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela, or Espelette and its famous chillies. A little further afield, you can discover the coastline with the beaches of Biarritz, a Mecca for surfers, or the charming bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz for a seaside getaway.
